I was tasked to redesign the book covers of four classics, none of which having a particularly happy theme. Using typography as the main tool for conveying the idea of the book, the challenge was to translate the themes of the book into expressive typography in a way that hasn’t been done before.

The book is about a dystopian society that is ruled by a totalitarian political party in which people are always being watched and manipulated. The protagonist, Winston, tries to increasingly rebel against this oppressing regime.
This book cover puts the viewer in a perspective looking up from a cage surrounded by tall walls written with the title. Along with the sharp forms and colour palette, this cover symbolizes the feeling of being trapped in a hopeless, colourless, and oppressed society.

The book is about Gregor who wakes up and suddenly finds himself to be transformed into an large insect. While trying to adapt to his new body he feels like an outsider in his home and with his family, causing a feeling of alienation.
The beetle from the book is also the protagonist in this cover. It is composed of a slimey, eerie, alien-like typography that indicates the transformation and the disgust that comes with it.

The book follows the memoir of Humbert about his obsession over a 12-year old girl he calls Lolita. He married her mother to get closer to her and increasingly controls and sexually abuses Lolita after her mother dies.
The design of this book cover is bold and raw, resembling the style of Saul Bass. This shows the contrast between the vulnerability and innocence of the girl, and the power and manipulation of the predator. It sends a powerful message in an abstract way.

Norman Bates runs a motel with his controlling mother. After a series of murders, it appears that Bate killed his own mother a while ago out of jealousy and developed a psychotic disorder taking over his mom as a second personality.
The cover for psycho uses a very direct and bold approach. The bloody red title, which is set in a screaming condensed font, is given a manual slash effect to convey the violent and dramatic theme of
the book.
